For Dr. Michael Weiner, the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease is all too familiar – his mother suffered from it, and her struggle with it has only spurred him to find a cure.

Dr. Weiner is the Principal Investigator of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the largest research study on the disease in the United States. He launched The Brain Initiative, an online registry that recruits and screens potential subjects for neuroscience-related investigations. He is also a full-time Professor in Residence of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco.

In recognition of his tireless efforts into Alzheimer’s disease research, he was bestowed with the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Award from the Alzheimer’s Association in 2011, and the Potamkin prize by the American Academy of Neurology in 2012.

“With better knowledge of the earliest stages of the disease, we may be able to test potential therapies sooner, when they have the greatest promise for slowing down the progression of this devastating disease. And we want that knowledge to be shared as broadly as possible. That is the premise and the goal of ADNI (Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative).”
