Many patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are curious about certain superfoods that are popular in the media. It's important to know that what may be well tolerated and digested by the general public may not actually be the same for individuals with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. This may depend on how much inflammation is present and whether the individual is in remission or experiencing a flare. For example kale is a really healthy food, it's high in antioxidants. But it's also high in insoluble fiber. So if an individual is having a flare, kale may make symptoms worse.
